    Marsden: Here and there
    Located in the heart of the Pennines, Marsden nestles at the head of the Colne Valley, surrounded by dramatic and beautiful countryside. The south side of Marsden is the Wessenden valley, a part of the Peak National Park, whilst the moors at Marsden are a National Trust area, whose office is near Marsden railway station.

    For anyone who enjoys walking on the moors, a visit to their Trust office is a must, here you will be able to obtain leaflets on the many walks around the Marsden area.

    More gentle strolls can be enjoyed walking on the narrow canal towpath to the Standedge Visitor Centre or in the other direction to the neighbouring village of Slaithwaite, and beyond to Huddersfield.

    SHOPPING

    Marsden has a bustling village centre, shops cater for everyday needs, butchers greengrocers, whole foods, bread shop, florist, clothing retailers, gift shop, antiques, charity shop, toy shop. There are takeaways, restaurants, several pubs, one of which brews it's own beer on the premises.

    EDUCATION

    There are Mother and Toddlers, playgroup,excellent nursery, infant and junior schools. The high school is situated four miles away. All further information about education can be obtained from Kirklees Metropolitan District Council Tel. 01484 221000.

    MUSIC

    Marsden has it's own brass band which enjoys great success and popularity as a Championship Section Brass Band. It has it's own bandroom in the village.

    The local Amateur and Dramatic Society perform an operetta, men's pantomime, and play each year which prove to be a big attraction.

    A festival which creates interest from far and wide is the Jazz Festival held in October. The village on this occasion is bursting at the seams.

    The venue for many concerts is the Mechanics Hall, which also incorporates the library. The hall can be hired for private functions.

    TV FAME

    The village is frequently used in TV series because of it's picturesque setting. 'Where The Heart Is' and 'Last Of The Summer Wine' are perhaps the most well known.

    LEISURE ACTIVITIES

    Marsden has a wide range of leisure activities:
    • A golf course is situated on a hill above the village, adjacent to it is the cricket field, bowling green and tennis courts.
    • Additional bowling and tennis can be found in Marsden park along with a playground for the children.
    • Junior and senior football teams play on the Fall Lane pitch.
    • Marsden Sports Hall activities include 5-side-football, table tennis, short mat bowling, and a gym.
    • Water sports are catered for sailing club; the narrow canal for pleasure boats.
    • The nearest swimming baths are at Slaithwaite three miles away.
    • For a more relaxing water activity there are various sites for anyone interested in fishing.
    • Yoga, dancing and keep fit classes can also be found in the village.
