We recently completed the build of phase two of Empire Works – a collection of 24 apartments which overlook the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, in Slaithwaite. And we have to say, we’re delighted with the finish of the properties, and how they have helped to transform what was once a derelict site.
Most of the new homeowners have now moved in, so we spoke to the very first couple who reserved an apartment…
The married retired couple, who formerly lived in a detached bungalow, decided to look at their options for downsizing – but had never really considered apartment-living, until they stumbled across Empire Works.
They visited our show home on-site and realised that they could quite-well live in an apartment, if the specification of the show home was anything to go by.
Their family were unsure and didn’t think it would be suited to them, because they had always lived in detached properties and weren’t used to having neighbours – but they took the plunge and haven’t looked back since.
Some of the major selling points for them, were the location, the high specification, and the idea that their home would be ‘future-proof’, with the help of the internal lift systems.
Being the very first people to put down their deposit, they had plenty of time to plan the space and changed the internal layouts to suit their living preferences; with an open-plan kitchen/living area, a large ensuite-bedroom, a master bathroom, a second bedroom – primarily used as an office – and a utility space.
As they were downsizing, they knew there would be adjustments to make – but they planned it to perfection.
The kitchen/living area
The couple added extra kitchen units, to provide them with plenty of storage space, as well as a double oven and built-in microwave. They went for matte-grey unit doors and an aluminium sink, which creates a modern finish.
The kitchen opens up onto a living area, which is extended into a balcony, overlooking the canal. Talking about their new living space, they said they feel like they’re on a ‘constant holiday’, enjoying views of the canal day and night.
The master bedroom
Within their bedroom, they planned for a Queen-size bed, adding two built-in wardrobes, to create plenty of storage space, while the mirrored doors ensure the space remains a feeling of openness. The full-length windows also flood the bedroom with plenty of light.
Within the master bedroom, is a master ensuite, complete with walk-in-shower, a built-in WC and vanity unit storage system and a backlit, demisting mirror – all from Easy Bathrooms.
The second bedroom
The couple have also fitted mirrored built-in-wardrobes into their second bedroom and manage to fit a single bed in there, as well as a desk – as they use it as an office space.
The utility space is the pinnacle of planning. It provides enough space for a washer/dryer, with plenty of shelving for all the essentials – including wine (!) – while the back of the door is the perfect space to keep the ironing board, with a pull-out washing line on the roof.
The result, is a beautiful home which they hope to live in forever!
